By Linda Turrey
Hair loss (alopecia) has numerous causes including hormone imbalance, medications taken, medical and emotional trauma, and of course genetics, which is probably the main culprit. When looking into the remedies available, the number of remedies far outweigh the causes. What may work for one person, may not work for another.
One avenue for fighting frustrating hair loss is the natural role that vitamins play not only in hair health, but our overall health. Below is a brief rundown on some of the vitamins that may be of benefit to your hair loss battle. As always, be diligent in your personal health, conferring with a doctor to ensure you are taking the appropriate dosages, and that you are truly benefiting and not harming yourself as you proceed with any changes in your diet and amount of vitamin intake. It has been proven that overindulging in anything, including vitamins, can prove toxic.
Vitamin A - Stimulates hair folicles, and since this is where hair growth starts, this is obviously important. A good daily dose of Vitamin A is 5,000 IU. Foods found in nature that are great sources of Vitamin A are all the dark vegies: Red peppers, dark green lettuce choices, carrots, etc... Now, this is truly one vitamin that can be toxic if taken in high levels, so follow directions carefully.
B Vitamins - Great stress reducer, and stress is one of the big causes of hair loss. B-Complex vitamins are the most convenient, covering the range of B vitamins, but some of the natural sources are red meat, brewers yeast and beans, egg yolks, poultry, liver.
Vitamin C - A wonderful antioxidant, fighting those nasty free radicals in your body. It is water-soluble, so your body does not store it and you'll need to maintain a diet full of fruits and vegies high in this vitamin. This powerhouse also will help to repair and manufacture tissue, helpful to the repair and treatment of hair loss.
Vitamin D - Hormones wreak havoc in regards to hair loss, and Vitamin D is actually a hormone. Sunlight will help add Vitamin D to your system, but a supplement may be necessary, especially if you are deficient in vitamin D.
Vitamin E - Wonderful internally and externally when it come to hair loss. Poor circulation is a contributing factor to losing hair, and Vitamin E is important for increased circulation throughout our body. For a healthier scalp, and as an aide to dry hair, break open a capsule of Vitamin E and massage into the scalp.
Lysine - An amino acid and a protein building block. Remember that hair is made of protein! Meat, poultry and fish are good sources of Lysine.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids - Fish oils that have shown to be helpful in prevention of thinning hair and hair loss. Salmon and sardines are the best.
Biotin - Also known as Vitamin H, a part of the Vitamin B complex. Biotin stimulates new cell growth through metabolizing protein carbs and fat, also aiding the transfer of carbon-dioxide. Wonderful sources are oats, brown rice, and sunflower seeds, to name a few.
So... eating healthy is truly a ticket to healthy hair, and vitamins and hair loss do have a connection. This may not be the whole answer to your hair loss issues, but it sure won't hurt, and certainly can help!
